About me

My name is Christoph Horbat, and I’ve spent nearly 30 years working as a boatbuilder – with a background in metal and wood, and the last 15 years focused on composite materials.

Born in Germany and raised within the world of skilled craftsmanship, my journey has always been shaped by a curiosity for form, structure, and the dance between function and aesthetics.

In my daily work, I handle advanced materials like carbon fiber. What fascinates me is the point where technique meets intuition – where engineering becomes expression. That same fascination drives my art.

Over the years, I’ve explored painting, woodwork, and stone – always searching for ways to turn ideas into form. But sculpture is where something shifted. My first piece, a carbon fiber sculpture crafted using the hand lay-up method, wasn’t part of a plan. It simply emerged – out of a desire to let space, tension, and material speak in a new way.

I’m drawn to opposites that don’t cancel each other out, but shape one another: light and shadow, stillness and movement, strength and delicacy. My work exists in that in-between space – where harmony is born from contrast.

The ideas are here. The journey has just begun.
